Instrument - Time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (Seinfeld)
Short name:
TOF-AMS (Low Resolution)
Full name:
Time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (Seinfeld)
What is being measured:
Particle inorganic/organic composition
Sampling Protocol:
Online
Manufacturer:
Aerodyne
Model:
AMS
Instrument year
:
None specified
Data recording software:
TOF-DAQ
Data analysis software:
Igor Pro
Raw data time resolution:
1 s
Analysis data averaging:
20 s
Detection limit:
0.1 ug/m3
Sensitivity to temperature (and correction method, if applicable):
:
Sensitivity to relative humidity (and correction method, if applicable):
:
Sampling method:
Direct sampling through 1/4" stainless steel tubing
Sample preparation method:
None
Sample residence time (chamber to instrument) (seconds):
Length of tubing (cm):
30
Instrument flow rate:
0.1 LPM
Tubing inner diameter:

Stainless Steel
Chemical identification method:
Chemicals are identified by Electron Ionization mass spectra. Organics is determined by summing up organic fragments. Inorganics (ammonium, sulfate, nitrate, etc.) are determined by their ions.
Data analysis method:
Igor protocol by the Jimenez group (https://cires1.colorado.edu/jimenez-group/wiki/index.php/ToF-AMS_Analysis_Software)
Quantification method:
As reported, e.g., Zhang et al., 2005: https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/es048568l
Calibration method:
Calibration with proxy standards.
Calibration drift estimate:
No estimate
Calibration schedule:
As Needed
Uncertainty estimation method:
Estimated by Matthew Coggon, operator of the TOF-AMS during the FIXCIT campaign (now at NOAA)
Known interferences:

Additional notes:
Note that aerosol growth was only observed during some experiments. These experiments have been analyzed using AMS high-resolution software (Pika) and are labeled as BulkHRTraces. In these files, you may find bulk organic, nitrate, ammonium, sulfate, O:C, H:C, OM:OC, S:C, and N:C traces. For all other experiments (in which no aerosol was observed), only bulk unit-mass resolution traces (labeled BulkUMRTraces) are given. Time is in seconds since start of the year.
